Etymology of SEYCHELLES

The word Seychelles is derived from the French name Les Seychelles, which is itself taken from the Jean Moreau de Séchelles, a French finance minister during the reign of Louis XV in the 18th century. While the exact reason for naming the islands after de Séchelles is unclear, it is believed that the French explorer Lazare Picault, who was the first to formally record the islands in 1742, named them in honor of his financiers or the French minister. Over time, the name was anglicized to Seychelles.
