Barbary sheep, scientifically known as Ammotragus lervia, is a species of wild sheep native to the arid regions of North Africa, including the rocky mountains and deserts of the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and parts of Sudan. It is also commonly referred to as the aoudad or waddan.
These sheep are characterized by their robust build, measuring approximately 1.4 to 1.8 meters in length and weighing between 45 and 140 kilograms. They possess a thick, coarse, and shaggy coat, which varies in coloration, ranging from light brown to reddish-brown or gray. Both males and females possess prominent curved horns, with those of males usually being larger and more impressive, growing up to 90 centimeters in length.
Barbary sheep are highly adapted to extreme desert-like conditions. They are capable of enduring long periods without water, obtaining moisture from the vegetation they consume. Their sharp hooves enable them to climb steep cliffs and rocky terrains proficiently, providing them a means to escape predators as well as access better grazing areas.
These animals are herbivorous and predominantly feed on desert grasses, leaves, and other vegetation found in their habitat. They possess a specialized digestive system that allows them to extract the maximum possible nutrition from low-quality vegetation.
Due to habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic livestock, the Barbary sheep population in the wild has significantly decreased, leading to their classification as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, they have also been introduced into various regions worldwide, including parts of the United States and Europe, where they are often found in semi-arid or mountainous habitats.
