In medical practice, bigeminum often indicates the presence of a premature ventricular contraction (PVC) or premature atrial contraction (PAC). PVC occurs when an electrical impulse initiates a ventricular contraction before the regular signal from the heart's natural pacemaker, and PAC occurs when a premature signal originates in the atria. These premature beats disrupt the normal rhythm, causing a pause before the subsequent regular beat. As a result, a pattern of intermittent normal and premature beats emerges, creating the bigeminum pattern.
