EADPCM, or Enhanced Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation, is a digital audio coding algorithm used for compressing and encoding audio signals. It is a more advanced and improved version of the Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) technique.
In EADPCM, the audio signal is sampled and quantized into a series of numerical values. These values represent the amplitude of the signal at specific points in time. However, unlike traditional PCM coding techniques, EADPCM does not directly store each sample value. Instead, it encodes the differences between consecutive samples. This is achieved by predicting the current sample based on the previous one and quantizing the prediction error. By storing only the difference values, the amount of data required for encoding the audio signal is significantly reduced.
The key feature of EADPCM is its adaptive nature. It adjusts the encoding parameters based on the characteristics of the input audio signal. This enables EADPCM to effectively allocate bits based on the dynamic changes in the signal, assigning more bits to complex and difficult-to-code segments, and fewer bits to simpler sections, thereby improving the overall signal quality.
EADPCM finds applications in various audio coding systems, including telecommunications, voice over IP (VoIP) applications, digital voice recorders, and audio streaming services.
