Leptoptilus is a genus of large wading birds belonging to the family Ciconiidae, commonly known as the storks. This genus consists of two species, the lesser adjutant (Leptoptilus javanicus) and the greater adjutant (Leptoptilus dubius). These birds are primarily found in the wetlands, marshes, and rivers of Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.
Members of the Leptoptilus genus are notably large birds with long legs, long necks, and large bills. They are characterized by their heavy and somewhat ungraceful appearance, which is compensated by their strong flight capabilities. The lesser adjutant is the smaller of the two species, measuring about 120-130 cm in length, while the greater adjutant can reach up to 150 cm. Leptoptilus storks have a diet consisting mainly of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. They are known for their exceptional foraging skills, often scavenging for food in shallow waters and wetlands. These birds construct large, platform-like nests made of twigs on trees, where they lay their eggs and rear their young.
Although Leptoptilus storks were previously more widespread across their native range, their populations have experienced significant declines due to habitat loss, pollution, and hunting. Conservation efforts are currently being implemented to protect these majestic birds and ensure their survival in the wild.
