Etymology of MUNICIPAL COURT
The word "municipal" comes from the Latin "municipalis", which is derived from "municipium". In ancient Rome, a municipium referred to a community or town that was granted certain rights and privileges. These communities were typically self-governing and had their own institutions, laws, and courts.
The term "court" has its origins in the Latin word "cohors", meaning "enclosure" or "yard". In Medieval Latin, the word "cortis" emerged, which referred to the enclosed area where a lord or ruler held his meetings or administered justice. Over time, "cortis" evolved into "court", which came to represent the place where legal proceedings occur and justice is administered.
