Phengite is a mineral belonging to the mica group. It is a complex aluminum-rich silicate and is considered as one of the end-members of the solid-solution series between muscovite and celadonite. The name "phengite" is derived from the Greek word "phengos," meaning "phantom," which refers to the unique appearance of this mineral due to its layered crystal structure.
Phengite commonly occurs as platy or flaky crystals, which display a slightly pearly or vitreous luster. Its color varies from pale grayish-white to greenish-brown and occasionally exhibits a unique blue tint. This mineral typically forms in metamorphic rocks, particularly in high-pressure and low-temperature environments, such as subduction zones.
Its physical properties include a monoclinic crystal system, a perfect cleavage on a basal plane, and a relatively low hardness of 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale.
