SHR rats, commonly known as spontaneously hypertensive rats, are a specific strain of laboratory rats that have been selectively bred to exhibit a genetic predisposition to high blood pressure. These rats were developed by Okamoto and Aoki in the mid-20th century through a selective breeding program. The rats were initially bred from a spontaneously hypertensive strain and were chosen based on their high blood pressure levels. Over generations, the descendants of these rats were further selected based on their blood pressure, ultimately resulting in the SHR strain.
SHR rats are characterized by their elevated blood pressure levels, which typically increase with age.
