Etymology of UP QUARK
The word "up" in "up quark" refers to the positive electric charge of the quark. The etymology of "up" in this context is derived from the concept of isospin, which was used to describe the symmetry between protons and neutrons in particle physics. Isospin was introduced by Eugene Wigner in the 1930s, and it was named to reflect its analogy to spin.
