This combination vaccine is administered through a series of injections, usually given to infants and young children, in order to provide them with immunity against these infectious diseases. Each component of the vaccine offers unique benefits:
- The diphtheria vaccine protects against the bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae that can affect the nose, throat, and respiratory system. Diphtheria can be life-threatening, causing severe illness and potentially affecting the heart and nervous system.
- The tetanus vaccine shields against the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a potent toxin that affects the nervous system. Tetanus can cause muscle stiffness, spasms, and potentially life-threatening complications if left untreated.
